Additionally, beginning December 7, 2019, WhatsApp will take legal action against those we believe are engaging in or assisting others in abuses that violate our Terms of Service, such as automated or bulk messaging or non-personal use, even if that decision is based solely on information available to us outside of our platform. For example, off-platform information includes public statements by companies about their ability to use WhatsApp in ways that violate our Terms of Service. This serves as notice that we will only take legal action against companies for whom we have evidence of abuse off the platform if that abuse continues after December 7, 2019, or if those companies are linked to evidence of abuse on the platform before that date.
Nothing in this announcement limits WhatsApp’s right to enforce its Terms using technology, such as blocking accounts based on machine learning classifiers, and WhatsApp will continue to do so.

Assembly Elections 2022: WhatsApp says it is taking action against bulk messaging

Meta-owned WhatsApp on Monday said it was taking action against accounts involved in automated and bulk messaging as political parties and individual candidates misuse the platform to reach out to voters ahead of Assembly elections in five states.

Reacting to an IANS story on how WhatsApp API (Application Programming Interface) tools help parties and candidates send political messages on WhatsApp to voters for just 8-10 paise per bulk message in a fraction of seconds, the popular mobile messaging platform said it is deeply concerned about the online safety of its users as well as maintaining the integrity of elections.

“WhatsApp has advanced spam detection technology that works 24/7 to identify and take action against accounts involved in automated and bulk messaging, including blocking such accounts for violating WhatsApp’s Terms of Service,” a company spokesperson said.

In December 2019, the company said it would take legal action against those who abuse the platform or help others abuse it by sending bulk or automated messages.
