Know that not every topic lends itself to a list format. For some topics, like “how to tie a tie,” this is pretty obvious. The search terms indicate that people are looking for a step-by-step tutorial, not a listicle with lots of different methods.

But not all topics are obvious…

For example, a topic like “seo expert” alone doesn’t clearly indicate whether people are looking for step-by-step tutorials, lists, or some other type of content.

In the screenshot above, you can see the top five ranking pages for “seo expert.” Most of them are step-by-step guides, so this might not be a good topic for a list post.

If you’re looking for good topics for a list post, try adding these words to the “Contains” filter in Keywords Explorer: ideas , tips , best , tools , things , strategies , tactics , list . This will narrow your search results to keywords that contain at least one of these words, which are usually good candidates for list posts.
