What are spelling bees?
A spelling bee is a contest in which participants must spell a series of words of varying difficulty. The exact date when they began is not known, but references to such contests have been found in documents dating back to 1808.
The most popular is the Scripps National Spelling Bee, held annually in the United States. It is attended by students under the age of 15 from all over the country and from abroad. The first edition took place in 1925. Since then it has grown in size and popularity. Since 2006, the finals have been broadcast live on television.
