According to experts, setting goals is only as good as your manager's ability to monitor them. But that can require some careful maneuvering on the part of the worker. Often, workers are willing to discuss what they would like to accomplish in the next five years. But they end up writing it down and it ends up in the back of a drawer.

According to a recent study, more than half of employees feel disconnected from work, finding goals for 2024 that are meaningful to them and their manager is vital to fostering a sense of purpose and engagement. Here are five steps to setting some meaningful 2024 goals.

Examine how you spent your time this year. Ask yourself what you'd like to do more of, what you'd like to stop doing, and what you'd like to start doing, career coaches say.

If you've noticed projects this year that have intrigued you, consider what skills you'd need to develop to take them on. If someone in your organization or industry has impressed you, think about why and how that relates to what they do. Ask your mentors what you need to practice, foster, or hone to be a better team member for the coming year.
