Canonical is a term that comes from the Roman Catholic tradition where a list of holy books was created and considered authentic. They are called the canonical gospels of the New Testament. Ironically, it took the Roman Catholic Church about 300 years and countless struggles to come up with this canonical list, and they ultimately settled on four versions of the same story.
