Aren't they just sitting behind the geraniums?

No, the elderly of 2011 are more likely to be playing with their iPads or Skype with their children and grandchildren. Take my own mother, for example: she is now over 60, but she tweets away happily via @Dwaaltuin . In the evenings, she also maintains her own website in Dreamweaver, about the garden that she opens to visitors as a hobby together with my father. She is also developing a tourist app with a group of seniors with location-based augmented reality as a hobby. Recently, she couldn't sleep; so in the middle of the night she figured out how to place a photo taken with her SLR camera with her tweets. And she succeeds!
And my mother is no exception! Seniors are now big social media users. Pew estonia phone number list Internet's survey of "older adults" (the new politically correct term for seniors) shows that the use of social networking sites by 50- to 64-year-old internet users increased by 88% between 2009 and 2010 to almost half, see the chart below. Among those 65 and older, it increased by 100% to over a quarter, the fastest growing segment! Almost half of the social seniors had visited a social networking site the day before the survey.
Use of social networks
Twitter is also increasingly being embraced by our fellow internet users aged 50 and over. In 1 year, the number of 50+ Twitter users in the US has grown by 120% to over one in ten! But iPad use takes the cake. In the US, in February of this year, almost 1 in 3 iPad owners was 45 or older. This also applies to the Dutch Mr. Strubbe, aged 86, who switched from his MS DOS computer to an iPad, as can be seen in the video below.
