Apps are tools
Apps are of course tools par excellence. An app is not a classic medium for conveying messages, we will undoubtedly agree on that. The boom in apps in the last few years illustrates the trend from media to tools. Social software (websites) is now about access to information, mashing it up and supporting social interaction based on that collected information. Social networks support user behavior, and only secondarily broadcasting behavior. The most appealing start-ups during #TNW2011 therefore had unlocking information as their starting point and goal. The world becomes a better place through more effective access to information. Adding yet another social network, with yet another account and adding friends and so on is much less inspiring. The Next Web is not about software and media, but about information, ease of use and interaction. Apps are currently changing our perception of the internet more than all the social media for which we can take writing courses.
For the average internet user, the internet is about being able to do things , more than about being able to transmit . Let alone that the internet is still about merely consuming formal media. That idea is only cherished by classic media managers, such as PR consultant Rubel. The prosumer prefers to read something
