“This is very Black Mirror, man”

It may sound far-fetched, or perhaps even like a story from the British speculative science fiction series Black Mirror. Especially the episode “I’ll Be Right Back,” in which, after losing her fiancé in a car accident, a woman purchases a service that, by collecting data generated during her lifetime, allows her to continue talking to him — first via chatbots, then by voice, and then… well, we won’t give any spoilers.

However, if we look back at technological portugal mobile database in recent years, everything indicates that synthesized media is about to gain ground. In the InfoWorld article, we find two very concrete and, why not, astonishing examples.

The first is Lyrebird , an AI system that, at first, could imitate any sound, from chainsaws to monkeys in a forest. However, with updates, Lyrebird has shown itself capable of reproducing any voice — including yours, dear reader.

Another example is this video of a short speech by President Obama. With one detail: the voice was completely synthesized. It was created by researchers at the University of Washington using a deep learning system (for voice reproduction) and by combining hours and hours of videos. In other words, it is completely fake. A little scary, right?
