The Volkswagen Group announced on Thursday, February 11, that it will use Microsoft Azure as the foundation to develop a new Automated Driving Platform (ADP) .
According to the company, with ADP running on Azure it will be possible to take advantage of the service's computing uk mobile database data storage capabilities to increase efficiency in the development of advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS, Advanced Driver Assistance Systems) and autonomous driving (AD, Autonomous Driving) for passenger vehicles of Volkswagen Group brands.
The group says ADAS and AD systems can help improve passenger safety, reduce congestion and make commutes more comfortable and reliable. But developing such solutions requires large-scale computing resources.
Petabytes of data collected on roads, weather conditions, obstacle detection and driver behavior need to be managed every day for training, simulation and validation of functions. Machine learning algorithms that learn from billions of kilometers driven, real or simulated, are essential.
The Car.Software Organization, a subsidiary of the Volkswagen Group created to centralize the software development efforts of the group’s companies, will address these challenges in partnership with Microsoft by simplifying the developer experience and leveraging “miles driven learning” through a centralized database of traffic information collected by the group’s vehicles, as well as simulation data.
Microsoft Azure compute, data and machine learning services , as well as Microsoft 's expertise in agile software development, will enable the creation of a unified development environment for Car.Software developers worldwide.
“ADP will help reduce development cycles from months to weeks and efficiently manage the enormous amount of data. The companies will start working on ADP immediately and are looking to continuously expand the functional scope of the development platform,” the Volkswagen Group said in a statement.
Both companies aim to empower technology partners to build tools and services that integrate with the platform to enhance the creation of AD and ADAS solutions.
“This is the next evolution of our foundational work with Volkswagen Group to advance its transformation as a software-powered mobility provider,” said Scott Guthrie, executive vice president of Cloud + AI at Microsoft.
“The power of Microsoft Azure and its computing, data and AI capabilities will enable Volkswagen to deliver safe and reliable autonomous driving solutions to its customers in less time,” he added.
