“Online stores should be created based on common sense.” I don’t remember who I heard this phrase from, but it’s one of the ones I use most often when the subject comes up in any conversation. It seems pretty obvious, but sometimes you can find websites that seem to be prepared to confuse, make buying difficult, …

Searching for information about Web Design and Online Stores (after looking at Threadless , an excellent online t-shirt store!) I found an excellent post about tricks to improve conversion in Online Stores. Or rather, 10 key points that every online store should take into account. We discuss them:
1-Make sure the shopping cart is always visible.
There is nothing more frustrating than clicking on “add to cart” and not clearly seeing that you have successfully completed this operation (or that you have done it twice).
2-Optimize the add to cart button.
Don't hide it, give it a positive color (I can't imagine a red "add to cart" button... although I have seen it!).
3-Simplify product/service searches with the autocomplete feature .
You may have products in your Online Store that are difficult to spell, or that are phonetically different from how they are written. Do your best to avoid losing these potential sales.
4-Make navigation simple, make click paths easy.
If you have a large list of products, divided into families, and common sense prevails, there is no need to hide or complicate navigation.
5-It offers visitors control over their shopping experience.
That they can sort product listings by category, price, size… That visitors feel like they are “owners” of their shopping experience.
6-Offers a quick preview of your store products/services.
By helping them quickly see what they are looking for, we encourage them to be more interested in continuing with the purchasing process.
7-Make the product page in question clear.
Once you have chosen a product, the page before “add to basket” should be completely clear, clean and tidy. Without distractions or a lot of information/photos.
8-Clearly indicates the actual availability of the products for sale.
There is nothing more frustrating than going to an online store, finding what you were looking for, checking prices-sizes-etc., clicking to buy and being told “sorry, we don’t have this product in stock.”
9-Offer alternatives and/or variations in a natural way, without being forced.
Although they are not exactly “online stores”, car websites have clearly managed to adapt this trick. Showing colour variations gives an extra plus to the potential customer “taking the plunge”.
10-Eliminate distractions at the key step, checking before purchasing.
Can you imagine your potential customer checking out and leaving because he saw “something” that distracted him?
