What seems like a dystopian imagination could be a utopian possibility. The Metaverse is the promise of the next generation of digital experience, full immersion and connection through three-dimensional spaces. All with Meta’s commitment to diversity, inclusion and equity within a metaverse.

At the end of 2021, Mark Zuckerberg announced the next chapter of his company with the rebranding of Facebook to Meta. “ We are putting a flag in the ground with Meta as our new name and vision for the future ,” Zuckerberg wrote in a February 15 post on the platform. He continued: “ Now is the right time to update our values and our cultural operating system .”

Once guided by single mission statements like “Move fast and break things” and “ Give people the power to build community and bring the world closer together ,” Meta now applies a set of company values : move fast; focus on long-term impact; build amazing things; live in the future; be direct and respect your peers; and Meta, Metamates, Me. While their meaning isn’t easily understood, they focus on invention, engagement, goal-orientation, usability, creation, and togetherness. This is certainly a very ambitious statement, but what does it hold for us, marketers, influencers, and consumers?

The question remains: what is a metaverse?
The term “ metaverse ” remains vague and intangible. To better understand the vision we can substitute it for “cyberspace” in a sentence. The meaning will not change substantially in 90% of cases. This is because the metaverse does not refer to a specific technology, but to a change in our interaction with technology . In fact, in 1992 Neal Stephenson coined the term “metaverse” in his groundbreaking novel, Snow Crash, to envision a wireless, online virtual reality experience. In literary form, Stephenson explores then-futuristic technologies such as mobile computing, virtual reality, wireless Internet, digital currency, smartphones, and augmented reality headsets.

The current metaverse also makes use of technologies such as virtual and augmented reality finance directors email database list . However, these worlds can also be accessed through VR or AR, but equally through PCs, game consoles and even phones. In a YouTube video, Meta shows how they even want to use a hologram similar to that of the Avengers , when a girl joins her friend at a concert that is taking place on the other side of the world.

Let's imagine the future together
Let’s just say that a parallel universe and the possibility of diversity and inclusion aren’t just any option. Metaverse is the vision of a world where we work and play together . Metaverse is the vision of a world for everyone, regardless of their physical presence. However, Meta states, “ It’s not necessarily about spending more time online, but about making the time you spend online more meaningful .” With all the speculation and criticism about these notions, we might have the possibility of actively creating the future we envision, as the metaverse can’t be built by a single company or overnight .

To achieve these ambitious goals, Meta strives to collaborate with experts from government, industry, and academia. Different companies can work together to ensure success, which depends on creating strong interoperability between services. Additionally, the tech giant plans to engage the human rights and civil rights communities to ensure inclusive and empowering technologies. These key areas are: economic opportunity; privacy; security and integrity; and equity inclusion.
