Before we move on to the practical part of our keyword research, we need to do some brainstorming. For example, let’s say you want to position yourself as a digital marketing expert.

On a piece of paper, make a list of keyword ideas and generic concepts that people might be searching for to find a digital marketing expert. For example:

Digital Marketing Expert
Digital Marketing Specialist
Marketing professional
Marketing Consultant
And so, write down everything that comes to mind from a third-party perspective. In other words, attorney email database if you were looking for a digital marketing expert, what would you type into search engines? How would you search for them?

Create a list of keywords
Now that you have a general idea of ​​how people would search for someone like you, the next step would be to start building your list of keywords. Keep in mind that LinkedIn doesn't have a specific tool for creating keyword lists, nor does it have a clear guide on which ones work best.

However, there are some practical strategies we can take to get a pretty good idea. For the first step, you'll need any keyword research tool. We recommend one that we really like, the Google Ads Keyword Planner .

Next, type the keywords you brainstormed into the tool. For each generic keyword, the tool will return hundreds of other keyword suggestions.

In an Excel file, paste all the keywords that you consider relevant to your profile. And of course, those for which you want to rank. We also recommend grouping all the keywords around the main generic concept.

Then, rank them by volume, starting from the highest to the lowest. Of course, this is not the only criterion by which you should choose your keywords, it is important to keep in mind other factors such as competition, for example.

Keep in mind that you are not going to use the entire list. We also don't want to overload our profile with too many keywords. For this reason, select only the most relevant keywords.

“Match” keywords with LinkedIn
Once you've created your list, it's time to take the second step. And that is, matching your keyword list to LinkedIn to find which keywords are popular on both LinkedIn and Google.

In a separate sheet within your Excel file, create a column for keywords unique to LinkedIn. Next, take the keywords you previously selected, for example, "marketing expert." Go to LinkedIn's search engine and type in your choice of words one at a time.

Of course, make sure to select the “in People” option. This way, you can find other profiles that are targeting the same keywords as you.

Once you do this, LinkedIn will return thousands, even millions of results for this keyword. This will be your competition. In your list, write down your keyword and the number of results it has.
