Celebrating World Environment Day in times of COVID-19

in the Areas of Occupational Risk Prevention , Environment and New Technologies at Bureau Veritas Training .

Since the United Nations Stockholm Conference in 1972, World Environment Day has been celebrated every June 5 .

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) invites us to participate in World Environment Day 2020 , whose motto is “Time for Nature” . This year’s theme is biodiversity , as recent events such as the massive forest fires in Brazil, California and Australia, the locust invasion in the Horn of Africa and now the COVID-19 pandemic demonstrate the close and complicated relationship between humans and nature.

The emergence of COVID-19 has made it clear that when we destroy biodiversity, we destroy the system that supports human life . Nature is sending us a message and we must respond. It is chinese america data important to remember that protecting our planet is a global task that concerns us all .

In these times of fighting COVID-19 , gloves and masks have become essential elements in our lives, as they help us protect ourselves, protect others, and stop this relentless virus. But if we get rid of these protective elements in an inappropriate and irresponsible way, we are not only putting everyone's health at risk, but also the health of our planet .

Every day in the streets of our towns and cities we can see abandoned gloves and masks , and this waste is already beginning to reach mountains, rivers, beaches, seas and oceans, constituting a serious environmental problem .

From the “LIBERA, united against litter” Project , created by the NGO SEO/BirdLife and Ecoembes , whose purpose is to raise awareness and mobilize citizens to keep natural spaces free of litter , a call is made to society against abandoning gloves and masks during the deconfinement stage.

At Bureau Veritas Training we also want to do our bit and ask you all to help us take care of the environment and the health of the planet, avoiding the abandonment of gloves and masks that can end up in natural spaces.

Not only is it important to take into account the guidelines and recommendations offered by the authorities for the safe removal of gloves and masks, but it is also vitally important to know what we are going to do later with this type of waste . All personal hygiene material (masks, latex gloves ...), in the case of homes without positive cases , must be deposited in the rest fraction (grouping of waste of domestic origin that is obtained once the separate collections have been carried out) and in no case can they be recycled , as stated in Order SND / 271/2020, of March 19, which establishes instructions on waste management in the health crisis situation caused by COVID-19.
